DescriptionWhile undertaking this Certificate III Laboratory Skills qualification, you will learn: a. Technical skills learnt during this qualification will include the safe use of laboratory equipment including the use of glassware, chemicals and basic instruments that are used across a range of laboratory environments. Students will also learn basic calibration techniques, the preparation of laboratory solutions, sample handling techniques, amongst other skills all of which are based on sound laboratory procedures. b. Employability skills will include: Following clear work instructions, working closely in a team and at times on your own, communicating with a range of different people whilst undertaking basic laboratory procedures, time management, maintaining safety in the workplace and understanding and operating to quality standards. c. Students need to approach this program with an enthusiasm to work in a laboratory environment with a view to develop a career and/or pursue further academic qualifications related to this industry. Students should possess reasonable numeracy and science skills and have an enjoyment of these subjects. d. This course is a combination of approximately 50 % theory which then relates directly to the 50% practical activities. These combine to build the required qualification competencies through the application of both skill and knowledge. e. The qualification will include formative assessment through work sheets and practical activity reports followed by summative theoretical and related practical assessments for each cluster. f. During practical activities within the laboratory and as instructed by the trainer (eg a field trip), students will be expected to wear white laboratory coats, enclosed shoes, eye protection and other PPE as required.
PathwaysCareer Pathways include: Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Sampler/Receiver, Laboratory Sampler/Tester, Laboratory Production Assistant, Laboratory Field Assistant, Pathology Sample Courier, Pathology Collector (depending on electives). Study Pathways Include: Certificate IV Laboratory Techniques, Diploma Laboratory Technology, Advanced Diploma Laboratory Operations, A variety of Science, Health Science, Forensic and Environmental degrees
