DescriptionThis qualification is a general industry qualification for persons operating at an assistant level and undertaking animal care functions in an animal care workplace. Job role titles covered by this qualification may include: • Animal care receptionist and support officer • Animal control and regulation assistant • Animal health officer on indigenous communities • Animal shelter assistant • Assistant animal welfare officer. The Certificate III in Animal Studies also requires a degree of physical fitness and ability, for example students will need to: • Use manual handling skills to lift animals and bags of feed • Work outdoors in a range of weather conditions • Work on uneven surfaces • Restrain animals • Undertake a range of routine cleaning tasks including, sweeping, raking and shovelling Topics covered include: • Animal care, hygiene and infection control • Nutrition and the provision of appropriate food and water • Animal behaviour and environmental enrichment for animals • Workplace Health and Safety (including supervising others) • Working in an environmentally sustainable way • Working well in teams and providing good customer service • Workplace skills and communication Whilst there are weekly theory components (approximately 50%) the course is also practical and students must be prepared to get fully involved every week. Employability skills include: working with others or in a team, as well as working on your own and you will need to feel comfortable speaking with a range of different people. Students will be required to wear sturdy enclosed shoes, no long or acrylic nails or nail polish. Long hair must be tied back during practical work, no dangling jewellery can be worn and piercings may need to be removed or covered during practicals. Students must behave as they would in the work place and model best practice, professional behaviour especially when undertaking work experience and other industry visits. This course will involve a range of assessment tasks including on-line activities, written assignments and practical assessments. Students must complete 15 days of work experience.
PathwaysAfter achieving this qualification, candidates may undertake specific industry stream qualifications at Certificate IV or Diploma level that define higher-level job functions.
PrerequisitesStudents must have completed Certificate II in Animal Studies.
Special RequirementsStudents will be required to participate fully in all aspects of the course. They will need to dress appropriately for undertaking a range of animal care activities (includes respectable attire and appropriate footwear.) Students are required to bring an exercise book and pen to every session.

Non-Department for Education students enrolling will incur a $1,000.00 administration fee. Selection ProcessPossible interview and/or written task. Previous successful completion of Certificate II in Animal Studies.
Orientation DetailsA COMPULSORY orientation session will occur on Friday, 1st of February 2019 at Northern Adelaide Senior College. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend this session to meet the teachers and become familiar with the school grounds and our policies and procedures.
