Course DescriptionThis qualification reflects the role of instructors who perform a range of activities and functions within the fitness industry. Individuals who complete this course will be able to provide individually tailored client assessments, provide technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They will also be able to provide supervision of a facility or serviced, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various customer enquiries. Course theory highlights include: • Basic anatomy and physiology of the human body • General Nutrition • Specific populations and associated fitness considerations • Quality service • Undertaking health assessments • Instructing fitness programs The fitness industry is a client service industry. People working in the fitness industry need to enjoy working with others. Fitness Instructors are expected to be physically active themselves and have a reasonable level of personal fitness. They need to have a client centred focus throughout their work, be enthusiastic and understand how to motivate others through effective communication, and role modelling. There are not only opportunities for personal satisfaction, but also the reward of helping others through exercise and the social benefits of organised activities. Whilst there are weekly theory components (approximately 40%) the majority of the course (approximately 60%) is practical and students must be prepared to get fully involved every week. Employability skills include: working with others or in a team, as well as working on your own and you will need to feel comfortable speaking with a range of different people. Expectations eg students will be required to wear the provided uniform during the course and model best practice, professional behaviour especially when undertaking practical sessions at the Elizabeth Aquadome facility and other industry visits. This course will involve a range of assessment tasks including on-line activities, tests and exams, written assignments and test along with practical assessments. Students will maintain a skills log book and undertake industry observations as directed by their course provider.
PathwaysStudents who undertake studies at Certificate III in Fitness - Gym Instructor enter a direct pathway to Certificate IV in Fitness – Personal Trainer [SIS40215] and can further their pathway to Diploma of Fitness – Specialist Exercise Trainer, [SIS50315] Completion of the Diploma of Fitness through TAFE SA offers pathways and specific credit transfer into related higher education qualifications (eg. Bachelor of Human Movement, Exercise Physiology, Bachelor of Health Sciences and Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity)
Entry RequirementsRestricted to Year 11 and Year 12. Certificate III in Fitness is the entry level qualification for work in the Fitness Industry.
Other RequirementsStudents will be required to be able to participate fully, in all aspects of the course. They will need to dress appropriately for being engaged in physical activity (includes respectable attire and appropriate footwear). Students are required to bring an exercise book and a pen to every session.

Northern Adelaide Senior College, The Hub, 2 Woodford Road, Elizabeth. Students will complete weekly theory at the NASC Campus and then be required to make their own way to the Aquadome, where practical work will be carried out in the gym facility.

34 Weekly session at Northern Adelaide Senior College on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 8:50am – 12:40pm, then at the Elizabeth Aquadome 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
Work Placement5 days
The qualification requires compulsory practical experience in a fitness workplace environment work placement (5 days equivalent in a real or simulated environment ) – the course has been structured to ensure students are exposed to working in a real industry environment and will accumulate adequate experience. Students will be provided with a TAFESA uniform (Fitness t-shirt). They will be required to wear this and other appropriate fitness clothing to satisfy the professional requirements of The Aquadome organisation and the TAFESA trainers.
