Course DescriptionThis course has a dog training focus. Skills are learnt to a standard of performance expected in a workplace and include: conditioning animals to perform basic and complex behaviours, animal handling skills, environmental enrichment for a range of animals, how to run dog training classes, providing advice to animal owners, how to conduct an individual behaviour consultation and how to market your dog training classes. You will need to work with others or in teams, as well as on your own; talking to a range of different people, time management and prioritising tasks, dealing with unexpected events, using communication technologies, planning and organising lessons for pet owners. Students need to come with a preparedness to work in all weather conditions and a strong work ethic. This course has 50% practical and 50% theory. A theory workbook is required for each competency in the course, practical work must be documented and a detailed logbook will be required to be completed during the compulsory work placements. Neat casual clothing and enclosed shoes must be worn, no acrylic nails or dangling jewellery.
PathwaysAlthough this course enables students to work in a range of animal related careers such as retail, animal shelter work and animal caregiving the main focus of the course is to enable students to begin a career as an Accredited Dog Trainer.
Entry RequirementsCertificate III in Animal Studies or equivalent. This course is for continuing Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services students from 2020.
Other RequirementsStudents are required to bring exercise book and a pen to every session.

35 weekly sessions at Northern Adelaide Senior College on Fridays from 09:00 until 15:30.
Commencement date 05/02/21.
70 weekly sessions over 2 years at Northern Adelaide Senior College on Thursdays from 9:00am – 3.30pm and Fridays From 9:00am – 3.30pm. Commencing 4th February 2021. Students are not to leave the NASC premises without approval.
Work Placement20 days
The qualification requires compulsory work placement and this is in addition to the training sessions. This may be done during the school holidays.
